Ecuador’s Ministry of Tourism has postponed implementing new legislation requiring visitors to prove they have health insurance before entering the country. Originally scheduled to go into effect on May 1, 2018, the new rules were recently given a new target implementation date of July 22, 2018.

It remains unclear if Ecuador will require health insurance for all visitors, or only for visitors staying in-country for more than 90 days. The Ministry of Tourism has yet to provide details on the process for submitting proof of insurance when entering Ecuador. More clarification will be released prior to the new effective date.

Acceptable types of insurance have yet to be announced, but travel industry experts expect that most travel protection plans sold in the US will satisfy this requirement.
