The app-based ground transportation provider Uber has been denied a license renewal by Transport for London (TfL), effectively ending its ability to operate in the UK capital when its current license expires on September 30. TfL rejected Uber’s renewal based on the finding that the company is “not fit and proper to hold a private hire operator license.” The rejection due to a number of issues, among them Uber’s reporting of serious criminal offenses, how medical certificates are obtained, and how background checks are run.

The Private Hire Vehicles (London) Act of 1998 allows Uber to appeal this decision within 21 days of its issuance, and Uber will be allowed to continue operations in London while the appeal process is pending. Approximately 3.5 million people use Uber in London.
