Lufthansa Strike Update

As of December 1, 2016, Lufthansa pilots belonging to the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union have ended their 48-hour walkout; however, travelers may still encounter delays due to repositioning of aircraft and crew. Yesterday, Lufthansa was forced to ground almost 900 flights due to the industrial action. The airline has cancelled approximately 4,500 flights since the walkouts began last week. According to reports, the strikes are costing Lufthansa 10 to 15 million Euros per day.

The industrial action is nothing new to Lufthansa. Pilots have staged periodic walkouts and protests over wage disputes since early 2012. During this round of action, the VC union was asking for an average annual pay raise of 3.7% for 5,400 pilots over a five year period backdated to 2012. Yesterday, Lufthansa offered a new deal that would reportedly raise pilots’ salary by 4.4% over two installments in 2016 and 2017. Both sides are hoping to renew negotiations and find a permanent solution to the issue within the coming weeks. Until then, travelers are left in limbo. While no new walkouts have been announced, until a permanent settlement is reached, the possibility for further protests and flight cancellations remains.
