American Airlines Makes Changes to AAdvantage Program

As the New Year begins, American Airlines is making a number of changes to its loyalty program. The biggest change is the creation of a new tier, giving the program four levels instead of three. The new tier, Platinum Pro, and will require 75,000 qualifying miles to achieve. The status includes all the benefits of Platinum, plus unlimited complimentary upgrades in 500-mile markets, the ability to upgrade a companion, a 72-hour upgrade window, and the ability to earn more miles per dollar spent. American has also moved its Concierge Key level, an invitation only status, to a formal elite tier above Executive Platinum. Unfortunately for travelers, and in keeping with its rivals, Delta and United, American is also introducing a revenue component to maintain status. In addition to the miles needed to reach status, AAdvantage members must also spend $3,000 on air travel to maintain Gold status, $6,000 for Platinum, $9,000 for Platinum Pro, and $12,000 for Executive Platinum.
