A short distance from Glacier National Park, this Montana town is filled with mountains and lakes making it the perfect place to breathe in the crisp fall air. Cherish the autumn leaves on Big Mountain as you kayak on the vast Whitefish Lake. No matter what you find yourself doing in town—shopping, drinking coffee, having lunch—you’ll constantly be surrounded by huge mountains covered with an assortment of colorful leaves.

Stowe, Vermont

Before skiing season begins, make sure to drive through Stowe, Vermont to admire the breathtaking New England foliage.  The prime time to see the sugar maple trees put on a vibrant show is usually from the end of September until the middle of October.  Shop until you drop at the many stores in town or have some drinks at one of the local breweries.

Stillwater, Minnesota

Book a bed-and-breakfast near the St. Croix River and take in the autumn culture of this small town. With Minnesota on one side and Wisconsin on the other, hop on a river cruise to marvel at the colorful bluffs that surround the St. Croix.  The historic town of Stillwater will take you back in time as you relax and appreciate the fresh fall air and magnificent views.

Lake Placid, New York

When the calendar turns to October, you will find an array of colorful trees taking over the Adirondack Mountains and the trails that run along Lake Placid. A scenic five-hour drive from New York City will put you in a completely different state of mind from that of the bustling city.  Make sure to canoe on Lake Placid or Mirror Lake, stroll along one of the many trails and visit the Farmer’s Market, filled with fall harvested food and beverages to score the perfect fall trip experience.

Franklin, Tennessee

If you can only get away towards the end of fall, punch your ticket to Franklin, TN.  This southern town doesn’t experience fall foliage until November!   Walk along the brick sidewalks, stop in the shops and appreciate the many restored, historic homes that make up the town. Don’t forget to experience the annual Pumpkinfest, the perfect fall festival filled with pumpkins, good times, and warm autumn air.
