Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador recently announced the construction of a new international airport at the Santa Lucia military base near Mexico City. Once completed, the new facility will vastly improve the airport system that services the Mexican capital.

The project will be spearheaded by the Secretary of National Defense and the Army Corps of Engineers. The new airport will share the existing air base and will operate 24 hours per day with state-of-the-art navigation, security, guidance, cleaning, and sustainability systems.

The “green light” for the airport at Santa Lucia officially canceled previous plans to build a new airport in Texcoco. The land that was originally leased for that airport will now become a national park, making President Obrador’s announcement a true win-win!
