Beginning in December, United Airlines (UA) will offer PlusPoints to its Premier Platinum and 1K members, allowing them to access all upgrade options via United’s website or the airline’s mobile app, becoming the first US airline to allow for upgrades without the need for a phone call. Under the new program, Premier Platinum and 1K members will receive a bank of points that can be redeemed for upgrades across UA’s entire network.

These points will replace Regional Premier Upgrades and Global Premier Upgrades as follows: one Regional Premier Upgrade will equal 20 PlusPoints; one Global Premier Upgrade will equal 40 PlusPoints. Members can now use PlusPoints to join upgrade waitlists for better advanced itinerary planning, with their points only being forfeited if their upgrade is confirmed. PlusPoints will not replace the airlines Complimentary Premier Upgrades benefit.
