A group of FROSCH agents recently returned from a trip to Hawaii’s Big Island and Maui amidst the backdrop of the Kilauea Volcano eruptions. We flew directly into Kona International Airport, and throughout our stay on the Big Island, we did not see one sign of volcanic activity. After a smooth flight on Alaska Airlines, we arrived on Hawaii’s breathtaking Big Island. Our trip from the airport to the hotel was filled with views of volcanic rock interrupted by one tropical paradise after another.

Tip: If you’re visiting the Big Island, a nice central base of operations is Waikoloa, with plenty of shopping and restaurants. Other areas of the island have fabulous resorts but are located a bit further away from the dining, shopping, and nightlife the island has to offer. Our home for the next three nights was the Mauna Kea Hotel, a lovely, relaxed resort with a decidedly authentic Hawaiian feel.

Tip: If you’re an experienced snorkeler, ask your FROSCH Travel advisor to arrange a night swim with the Manta Rays – it’s a once-in-lifetime experience!

We visited several hotels on the Big Island. The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is a sleeker, more modern option when compared to the Mauna Kea Hotel, but both properties share amenities. The Fairmont Orchid is a wonderful property with stunning grounds. The property has a small beach protected by a nature cove and a 10,000-sq. ft. pool. The Four Seasons Hualalai is meticulously maintained and the gorgeous gardens, well-appointed rooms, award-winning golf course, terrific dining options, and multiple pools truly provide something for everyone.

If you’re traveling in a group, work with your FROSCH Travel Advisor to arrange a Snorkel and Dolphin Adventure-a unique experience. We viewed a pod of dolphins, snorkeled off the boat, and enjoyed the 20-foot water slide. There was plenty of shade to escape the sun and continental breakfast and buffet lunch can be arranged.

The next day we flew Hawaiian Airlines to Maui and headed straight to our hotel, the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua. This resort is captivating, with luxury amenities including two golf courses, a locally inspired spa, six restaurants, and outdoor activities that highlight the surrounding natural beauty. After checking in to the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua, we visited the unique Montage Kapalua. This all villa property ranges from 1-bedroom to 4-bedroom units. The smallest unit is 1,250 sq. ft. and all are equipped with gourmet kitchens, living/dining rooms, at least one separate bedroom, at least 1 ½ baths, and a laundry room. This is a great property for families, golfers, and any group that requires separate sleeping arrangements. There is a beautiful beach, great pool, two golf courses, and three restaurants…all on property.

Tip: One “can’t miss” experience on Maui is The Old Lahaina Luau. This is the most authentic Hawaiian luau and probably the best there is. The food was delicious, the beverages were free flowing, and the entertainment was wonderful. Our evening was filled with a buffet of traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music, as well cultural dances and demonstrations, giving us a genuine reflection of Hawaii’s rich history while enjoying an ocean view and sunset.

If you want to escape it all, then look no further than the Four Season Lana’i. This property is reachable by ferry, helicopter, or small airplane. A stay at the Four Seasons Lana’i is like entering your own private oasis filled with peace and tranquility. The rooms are stunning, the grounds are gorgeous, the golf is amazing, and the food is delicious.

The Four Seasons Maui again features the environment and amenities we’ve come to expect from this brand — gorgeous gardens, spacious rooms with a soothing palette, great pools and beach, and multiple dining options. This is the place to see and be seen on Maui!
Another fantastic hotel option is the Andaz Maui. With a Polynesian flare, it still manages to exude a sleek and modern attitude. It’s a large resort that doesn’t fee large — filled with lush gardens, a great pool and waterfall area, and an amazing beach!

Tip: No trip to the Hawaiian Islands is complete without experiencing them from above. A helicopter tour over Hana and Haleakala is an eye-opening experience for anyone lucky enough to experience it. The highlights of both East and West Maui are united in this unique aerial tour of the island. We saw Haleakala Crater, Oheo Gulch, Hana Town, Hana Rainforest, the rugged shoreline of Northeast Maui, and the meandering valleys set in the rainforest of the ancient West Maui Mountains. We learned about the history and culture of the sights from the pilot, who was also a State of Hawaii Certified Tour Guide!

The Hyatt Maui Resort and Spa is in a great location for our clients that want to be where the action is. This 40-acre property sets on a beautiful stretch of Ka’anapali beach. The grounds are beautiful, and this property offers two pools, as well as beach front cabanas for guests to enjoy. There is a variety of wildlife on property, including the resident penguins – yes, they have penguins in Hawaii. The Marilyn Monroe spa, sits ocean front and has stunning views – who wouldn’t enjoy a pedicure while watching the surf? (Talk with your FROSCH Travel Advisor about some additional enhancements to the hotel that are forthcoming.)

Some other notable hotel properties on Maui are the Fairmont Kea Lani – the white gem of Maui. This all-suite and luxury villa resort truly embodies the Aloha spirit. From the gorgeous gardens to the picturesque sunsets, this truly is a special resort. The staff at this hotel is top notch and you will not want for anything. The Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Hotel, is a resort of epic proportion, with 40 acres of premier oceanfront real estate, just steps away from Wailea Beach. The resort has six major design themes: flowers, trees, sound, light, and art, all in celebration of the Hawaiian culture. Built in the shape of a turtle, the resort has a unique design and feel. With one of the best pools in Hawaii, a variety of room and villa choices, dining options, activities, spa and so much more. it is easy to see this resort is a favorite for so many.

The big island and Maui are spectacular islands with a variety of lodging and activities that will appease almost any traveler. Work with your FROSCH Travel advisor for a Hawaii itinerary tailored specifically to your interests!
