US Passports to Get a Makeover in 2016

Updated security features to the US Passport will be unveiled later this year, as part of the government’s efforts to cut down on fraud, forgery, and misuse. The updated passport will feature an embedded data chip on the information page, and will be protected by a polycarbonate coating, allowing the photo and data to be laser engraved on to the page. This will help prevent passport books from getting wet and bending, and if someone’s passport is stolen, the chip will keep people from falsifying an identity.

The security features don’t stop there. Now, the passport number will be laser cut as tapered perforated holes through all of the passports pages, which will make tearing out or subbing in pages more difficult.

Of course, on top of the new security features, all of the pages will get an artwork makeover, and some of the designs on the pages will be embossed or raised. Special ink will also appear to be green or gold, depending on which angle the passport is being viewed.

A passport redesign has been in the works for several years now, as part of the same initiative that eliminated extra pages to increase security, but this year we’ll finally see it happen. You can get your hands on the new US passport this upcoming July, when it is expected to debut. In fact, the US State Department is expecting to issue more than 17 million new passports and renewals this year, which is 1.5 million more than those issued in 2015!
