Delta Plans to Use RFID to Track Checked Luggage

Baggage tracking technology is coming to the US for the first time, thanks to Delta Air Lines. The carrier has announced it will start using new tracking technology called Radio Frequency Identification on all of the 120 million bags it flies each year. After years of scanning barcodes to track baggage, this new technology is a historic enhancement to the airline industry.

Delta’s $50 million investment will enable scanners to use radio waves to capture the highly accurate and consistent data stored on a RFID chip embedded in the luggage tag, driving superior tracking and increased transparency. Delta’s reasoning behind adopting this new technology is to reliably deliver every bag on every flight. You can stop stressing about whether or not your luggage will arrive by the end of 2016, as Delta Air Lines plans to have the new system in place in the upcoming months!
