Rome’s Colosseum Undergoing Renovations

Ambitious Plans Ahead

Rome’s Colosseum, the world’s largest amphitheater, is finally having major work done after decades of decay and multiple quick fixes. Luxury Italian leather-goods company, Tod’s, is sponsoring Phase 2 of 3 of the ambitious renovations to the Colosseum, whose first foundations were laid in 72 AD. The iconic monument has several factors contributing to its decline, including the blackened lead-fueled traffic from Vespas and Cinquecentors, random bronze and iron support rods that were inserted in the 50s and 60s, and the foot traffic of millions of tourists.

The Future of the Colosseum

Work officially began in 2013, and so far 31 arches and 44,000 square feet of ancient concrete on the northern and southern facades have been scrubbed. Next up is the restoration of passageways and underground vaults. Current goals for the completion of the project include cleaning a further 33,000 square feet of travertine and installing 3,000 square feet of new iron gates and frames. The upcoming upgrades to the Colosseum are the latest in a string of high-profile renovation throughout Italy, including the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, many of which have been sponsored by luxe Italian fashion brands.

Don’t Let Renovations Disrupt Your Travel Plans

Even with this restoration work being done, don’t worry if you have plans to visit the Colosseum in the near future! A big bonus to visiting it now is the discovery of once-hidden details, such as small, low reliefs depicting gladiators, delicately painted frescoed plaques, and a series of unique rosette carvings below the lower cornices on the northern exterior.
