The world’s second busiest airport, Beijing’s Capital International Airport, will soon get a break! Beijing New Airport is set to open in 2019 in the southern Daxing district. The new airport will become the new base for China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines; it will also allow all of the SkyTeam alliance members to be in one terminal, facilitating passenger connections.

The new 2,296,588-square-foot terminal boasts an innovative design, featuring a central hub with six curved spikes and walkways to make navigating the terminal easier. The design was heavily influenced by the concept of symmetry to create an open space that radiates harmony and balance. The Terminal building will include separate areas for international and domestic passengers, in order to reduce travel times. Initially, the airport will open with four runways. Expansion plans could increase the airport’s capacity to 100 million passengers a year.
