Travelers heading to Kenya should be mindful of a new government ban on the manufacturing, use, and importation of plastic bags into the country, which includes plastic bags found in luggage arriving to Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Any traveler entering Kenya who is found with a disposable plastic bag in their possession will have the bag confiscated by airport authorities. This includes bags obtained by making a Duty Free purchase in the airport. Anyone found using a disposable plastic bag (including handled carrier bags and flat bags with no handles) in Kenya will be subject to a fine of $38 USD as well as prison sentences of up to four years. Kenya joins more than 40 other countries who have banned disposable plastic bags in an effort to reduce waste.
