A New Way to Be Smart… With Your Suitcase

It seems like the travel industry has an obsession with all things “smart.” There are, of course, smartphones, smart watches, smart hotel rooms, and smart seat-back entertainment sets. New to the smart space is the smart suitcase, and multiple brands and technology companies have partnered together to create an even better experience for travelers.

Samsonite
At the end of 2016, Samonsite will be launching a new line of smart suitcases enabled with Track&Go technology. The suitcase will have Bluetooth technology and Eddystone Ephemeral Identifiers, which are an open privacy/security protocol developed by Google. The technology will work hand-in-hand with the Travlr by Samonsite app, which allows travelers to search for the location of their suitcase within a 230 feet radius. If a traveler’s suitcase goes missing, they can flag it as lost within the app. The app will use its database of users to help locate the missing suitcase; a location notification will go off on another user’s app, notifying the owner of the lost suitcase. While handy, successfully finding a lost suitcase will still be dependent upon the Travlr by Samsonsite app’s network.

Delsey
Another smart suitcase company, Delsey, will soon be launching the newest prototype of its Pluggage suitcase. Ten of the most popular features from previous prototypes have been combined to create the new design. They include fingerprint recognition and tracking technology by Lug Loc (used in Samonsite’s GeoTrakR products). A Pluggage app will be available for users to use with their suitcase, which has the capabilities to access flight information and changes. In addition, the app will be able to determine the weight of the suitcase, detect when it has been loaded onto the plane, and when the suitcase is in the carousel at baggage claim. Other features include a lighting system, speaker, and phone-charging capabilities.
